Uniting Grandmothers in Canada & Africa with a Hop, Skip and a Jump

The One World Challenge is a fundraiser in support of African grandmothers caring for children and youth orphaned by the AIDS pandemic.

When the AIDS pandemic swept across sub-Saharan Africa, it was grandmothers who, having lost their own children, stepped in to raise children whose parents died of AIDS-related illnesses. The Stephen Lewis Foundation’s grassroots partners, often led by and for grandmothers, provide holistic care and are critical support systems for their communities.

The One World Challenge is a virtual journey through sub-Saharan Africa to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign. It runs from May 1 to September 1, 2021.

Hosted by One World Grannies, the Challenge invites participants from the Ottawa-Gatineau Region and beyond to trek the length of sub-Saharan Africa, visiting countries where the SLF’s community-based partners work. Our team members have committed to various physical activities over the summer. Every hour they are active translates into 5 km. on our African journey. We hope you will encourage them by taking on the Challenge yourself or with a one-time donation to our new collective goal of raising $45,000 for the Grandmothers Campaign.

We invite you to explore this site to learn more about the Grandmothers Campaign, the Challenge, our progress on our trek and toward our fundraising goal. Or just click the green Support Us button on any page to participate in the Challenge or donate to it.

Our goal is to raise $45,000 and cover a distance of 10,154 km.

Why are we doing this?

As members of the Grandmothers Campaign, Canadian grandmothers from coast to coast act in solidarity with their African sisters who are parenting anew with few resources. Funds raised through the Grandmothers Campaign support vital services and programmes; for example, grief counselling, support groups, income-generating activities, access to healthcare,  support to pay for school fees and so much more.

The funds we raise also support African women on the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic who are agents of change, leaders, and experts in what it takes to rebuild their communities. They are working valiantly to fight stigma, raise awareness, and demand their human rights.

Today, African grandmothers are especially in need of support as they deal with the triple jeopardy of HIV and AIDS, COVID-19, and climate change.

Why should you support the Stephen Lewis Foundation?

The Stephen Lewis Foundation is a progressive, feminist organization rooted in the principles of social justice, international solidarity, and substantive equality. The SLF was created with the express purpose of supporting community-based organizations working on the frontlines of the AIDS pandemic in sub-Saharan Africa.
