One World Grannies and guests from other grandmother groups gathered on December 16 for a buffet lunch and “Re-thinking Good Intentions,” a one-act play, wonderfully performed by Nancy Edwards. Nancy is a retired Canadian community health nurse and professor of epidemiology who worked in the field of global health and development for forty years. Her story recounted her days as a young nurse in the rural villages of Sierra Leone in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Her tales of village life starkly conveyed the ravages of poverty and disease she encountered. Nancy also shared her cultural education, her numerous cultural faux pas, and the large impact her West African experiences have had on her life. Thank you Nancy for sharing your story and for bringing along the book on which it was based. And thanks as well to all who created this opportunity to gather as a region.
