National Grandparents Day, Sunday September 8th, 2024, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Please join the One World Grannies (OWG) and other Ottawa-Gatineau Regional Grandmother Network (O-GRGN) groups on the William Commanda Bridge. Friends, family and the public are all invited!
Watch for the Kitchissippi Times article at the end of August!
Claudette Commanda, Chancellor, University of Ottawa and granddaughter of the late revered Algonquin elder William Commanda, will make remarks between 11 – 11:30 am. City Councillor Jeff Leiper of Kitchissippi Ward, which includes the bridge, will also participate at that time.
Let’s connect with grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa by writing messages of solidarity and pinning them on the “Clothesline”. Materials and markers provided! These messages will be sent to the Grandmothers Campaign office to forward to African grandmothers, demonstrating our ongoing commitment and support of their work.
Maureen Murphy, OWG’s very talented photographer, recently recognized for her work by the Grandmothers Advocacy Network (GRAN), will be on hand to take pictures of the event. You are also encouraged to take your own pictures to share on your social media networks.
Let’s show what we can do to raise awareness about the Grandmothers Campaign! Information will be provided to share with the public passing by and you can also share your own motivation behind joining the Campaign. Join in to show the impact we continue to have, and to share the message “We will not rest until they can rest”.
We anticipate a fun-filled event, as we walk the talk and connect with others as they walk, bike, rollerblade, run or dance across the bridge. SEE YOU SOON!
Notes:
We are keeping our fingers crossed for a sunny day! There are some benches on the bridge, bring a hat, and of course WATER. If it’s raining trade the hat for rain gear.
Directions: The easiest ways to get to the bridge entrance are from the Bayview LRT station, the bike path along the river, or carpool and park on a side street just south of the Kichi Zibi Mikan Parkway. Refer to map and photos of the bridge.
