GRAN is asking Canada to contribute generously to this critical fund that combats HIV, tuberculosis and malaria, builds health systems, and readies the world for pandemics. In 2022, GRAN and other organizations successfully campaigned for increased Canadian support — resulting in a 30% increase. It is now time to renew the funding for 2026-2028 and Canada has not yet announced its commitment. Please take a minute to add your voice to the necessity of sustaining this fund at a time when the U.S. is withdrawing from international development commitments. Read on to find out more about the Global Fund and the simple actions you can take.

A LETTER FROM GRAN
Dear GRANs,
We hope you are all enjoying the summer.
GRAN activity usually goes “quiet” during the summer, as we all need time to rest and refresh, but we think it’s important to let you know about efforts underway to support the eighth Global Fund Replenishment. Our partner, Results Canada, has kicked off its #WinTheFight campaign in support of the Global Fund, and we are encouraging all GRANs to support this advocacy initiative over the summer.
The Global Fund in a Nutshell
GRAN is a longtime supporter of The Global Fund. The fund pools the world’s resources to invest in programs to fight HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, build resilient and sustainable health systems, and strengthen pandemic preparedness. Over the past two decades, the Global Fund has invested more than US$65 billion, saving 65 million lives and reducing the combined death rate from HIV, TB and malaria by more than half in the countries where it invests. The Global Fund raises money in three-year cycles known as Replenishments. The eighth fundraising cycle is now underway to cover programs for 2026-2028. The Global Fund’s financing primarily comes from the public sector, with more than 90% of its funding coming from donor governments. Canada has yet to announce its pledge for this replenishment.
Canada’s Commitment
In 2022 GRAN campaigned, along with many of our partners, for Canada to strengthen its commitment to the Global Fund, which resulted in Canada increasing its investment by 30%, to $1.21 billion over three years. Watch this 3-minute video to learn more about Canada’s leadership in the Global Fund since its inception and the urgency of a renewed commitment.
Our Role
Because replenishment efforts have begun, with some countries already announcing their pledges, it is important for us to advocate now for Canada to build on its previous support for the Global Fund. Prime Minister Carney has said, “Canada steps into global leadership when others step out.” We must urge our government to live up to this promise.
We encourage you to take one or more of these advocacy actions in support of the Global Fund over the summer:
- send an email to the Minister of Finance
- attend one of your MP’s community events
- write a Letter to the Editor
- use social media to share Sibu’s story.
You will find more information about The Global Fund and tips for each of the suggested actions on Results Canada’s Global Fund Campaign page.
Thank you, GRANs, for taking time out of your summer to speak up for global health.
Linda and Cathy
