The Malealea Development Trust (MDT) works in 23 villages in the rural area of Malealea Valley in the Mafeteng District of Lesotho. They facilitate access to medical treatment, support adherence to ARV medication, and promote HIV prevention and positive living. Working in partnership with a local clinic, MDT fills service gaps by providing support not offered by the clinic. Some of these additional supports include transportation stipends to enable clients to access procedures not available at the local clinic (such as x-rays and tuberculosis treatment), and a nutritional supplement for clients taking ARV medication to boost their immune system and the efficacy of the medication.

Across Africa home-based care workers such as these with mothers2mothers (Lesotho) travel long distances to reach communities. Most of them are women who volunteer their time, skills and leadership. Photo: Ryan Tantuan
